Textile designer and hand-weaver, Liz Christy is from the market town of Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan. “Hand-woven by Liz Christy” is a contemporary craft business located at Swallow Studios, which Liz built in 2003. This bright and airy workshop at Annyalla overlooks the beautiful rolling hills of County Monaghan. It is open to the public to visit and see the age-old craft in progress as Liz and her collegues weave her original scarves, shawls, cushions & throws. Liz’s love of colour echos what she sees around her every day, the fresh hues of springtime crocuses and bluebells, the vibrant highlights in our summer landscape, the richness in shades of autumn as well as shimmering water-filled winter scenes. Her passion for colour, which is evident in her textiles, takes inspiration from the Impressionist paintings of Claude Monet. Liz designs using luxurious yarns some of which are hand-dyed, thus each piece is truly unique. Each piece is hand knotted when weaving is complete and then it is hand washed to bring out the luxurious softness of the fibre. Each scarf or throw is special, guaranteed hand-woven in Ireland. As Liz says “ours is an age-old craft with no electric switches, our flying shuttle looms are operated by ‘human’ power alone. Thread passes through our hands many times in the making of our textiles. We design and prepare the warp, comb it onto the loom, fill bobbins, weave, and tassle and wash…all by hand” Liz Christy scarves and wraps are a quality Irish product and have a wide appeal. As a fashion accessory, they look great worn casually for an outdoor country look, to accessorize a smart classic coat, or as a luxurious and elegant evening / bridal wrap, while a touch of the traditional is added to the contemporary home with the hand-woven cushions and throws. |
